The Battle Is The Lord's
Text: 1Samuel 17:33-36
On Sunday, November 28th,
Pastor Durham enlightened our congregation on God's ability to make
a seemingly impossible situation very possible. He used the story
of David and Goliath to remind us that the weapons of Christian warfare
are not carnal, but spiritual.
As an overview, he reminded
us that God has a track record of fighting for His people. He mentioned
of the our Lord parting the Red Sea, battles with the Midianites and
Gideon's small but powerful army. The battle of david and Goliath
was no different.
To set the stage, the
battle took place in a valley. The Philistines (Goliath's people)
we on one hill and the Israelite's (David's people) were on the other,
like bleachers. Going into battle, David was a physical underdog,
being Saul's personal musician. Goliath was a giant, standing over
nine feet tall and wore a bronze helmet, leggings and carried a bronze
spear. his armor weighed over two hundred pounds and the head of his
spear weighed twenty five pounds. Seeing that, david could have been
intimidated, but he wasn't. we all have circumstances in life that
could parallel this story. we all have giants that try to destroy
us and our testimony. Pastor Durham taught us that we cannot defeat
our Goliaths by using carnal weapons!
David, the son of Jesse,
was a shepherd boy. Saul had aseverly depressed spirit and was in
need of a musician to play music to soothe his spirit. He heard of
David, and sent for him to come and play for him. David became Saul's
personal musician and armor bearer. he even lived in Saul's palace.
Prior to that, while tending his father's sheep, he had killed a lion
and a bear with his bare hands! David had no idea when he was in the
pasture , he was being prepared for this battle. Pastor Durham taught
us that God prepares us in the pasture. The problem with us is that
we always want to be in the palace.
This battle was more
than physical; it was spiritual. Saul didn't understand this, and
tried to give David his armor to fight with. When david put it on,
it was too heavy. David fought with the Word instead. His other weapons
included prayer, praise and the spirit of God. He didn't need Saul's
armor. He was spiritually tall and spiritually strong. He was wearing
God's armor! he used five smooth stones and his faith in God to slay
Goliath.
This battle was the Lord's.
