"Some reasons
why we should give thanks"
Text: Ephesians 5:20
In this sermon, Pastor
Durham reminds us not only why to give thanks, but also when and where.
In this passage of scripture,
Paul was addressing spirit filled Christians, reminding them of how
they should act. Verse 18 of this chapter encourages the saints to
be spirit filled. Verses 19 and 20 examines the character of the spirit
filled person. We should worship and praise God (v.19) and give thanks
for everything (v.20).
The first reason Pastor
Durham explained for giving thanks was because it is the proper thing
to do. Giving thanks is always in order.. Referencing James 1:17,
pastor reminded us that everything good and perfect comes from God.
God gives us our jobs, health, finances and everything else that we
have been blessed with! Even Job, God's humble servant, whom God allowed
the devil to tempt, knew that everything came from God. The rich man
in Luke 12:16-21 was pleased with God's gift, but forgot the giver.
Pastor Durham left us with this thought: "People who get rich
on earth, but not in heaven are fools."
Next, Pastor Durham reminded
us that our thanksgiving should be perpetual. We should always give
thanks, not only on Thanksgiving day. What about health, strength,
protection, big things and little things? God is always good! He also
mentioned how the older you get, the less you take for granted. We
should be careful for nothing.
Finally, our thanksgiving
should be pervasive. It should be everywhere, spread it all over!
We should be thankful in church, at home, school and work. We have
to learn to be content with what we have. Even in unfortunate situations,
we should be grateful. Paul was content in whatever state he was in.
We ought to be able to say "I'm blessed" at all times. Like
the songwriter said "I Won't Complain".
