To start off the New Year, Minister
Mills gave our congregation a soul-stirring message that reminded us
that God has a very important invitation for all of us. Taught from
2 Samuel 9:11, the message was called “An Invitation to be with
the King”.
Samuel was a judge. His sons were judges
also. Unfortunately, his sons weren’t as honorable in their profession
as he was. The people got tired of how his sons were acting. They were
accepting bribes from people, and their behavior was perverted. Samuel
prayed to God for him to bring a king to this land.
Saul was the king that God brought. He was tall, attractive, strong,
an ex-military leader, and was a descendant of the tribe of Judah. With
all of these characteristics, you would think that he would be an awesome
leader. Quite the opposite was true. Saul turned against God in times
of trouble, and made some very bad decisions for his people. His mistakes
teaches us that in order to be a good servant, we have to serve God’s
way.
Saul was also a jealous man. He was envious of David. God had raised
David up among the people of the day. David had the favor of God on
his life. When it came to fighting Goliath, Saul was scared of him,
but David was able to stand against him because of his faith. Saul despised
this. But David had a liaison on the inside that was looking out for
him. David was a friend of Saul’s son Jonathan. The two of them
had made a covenant for Jonathan to tell David if Saul was plotting
against him. This reminds us that we all need good friends.
After this covenant was established, David needed to hold up his end
of the bargain. He still needed to fulfill the vow he had made to Jonathan.
He went looking for him to make good on the covenant, but was only able
to locate Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth. David found the boy to
be in a lame condition because of a fall he had suffered. He found him
in the city of Lodebar, a place where people went to hide. We can’t
hide as Christians. We have to face God. The invitation that David had
for Mephibosheth was a good one, like the one God has for us. Just like
David was looking for Jonathan, God is looking for us. The invitation
God has for us includes victory. He has come to bless us!
Mephibosheth was very surprised to receive the invitation David had
for him. Since he couldn’t locate Jonathan, he dealt with his
son instead. Even in his lame condition, David invited the boy to come
to eat at his table. Some of us are just like Jonathan’s son,
lame in some way. But we have been extended the same invitation, to
come and eat at the king’s table. We can sit and have joy at His
table. This invitation has no strings attached. And, best of all, it’s
free! Why not accept God into your life?
